The Macquarie Experience Program

The Macquarie Experience Program has been designed by Macquarie University departments and divisions to specifically complement current high school students’ studies and supplement the syllabus.

The Macquarie Experience program concentrates on Science activities and areas that meet the syllabus outcomes for Human Society and its Environment subjects. We can also tailor activities programs for any other subject area that may not fall into thoes categories.

Activities can be tailored to individual school needs but may include half-day specific syllabus topics (e.g. water quality analysis) or a full-day of activities that may complement a core unit in the syllabus (e.g. microscopy activities, biological museum exploration and a visit to the biological sciences plant research facility for the Patterns in Nature unit in the Biology syllabus).

If you can’t make it to Macquarie we can also bring a modified program of activities to you!

Get in Touch: Science, Engineering and Technology Program

All activities have been designed to engage and excite students in the areas of science, engineering and technology. They are both interactive and informative and have been planned to correlate with the NSW Board of Studies Stage 4 and 5 Science and Information and Technology outcomes as well as the Stage 6 areas of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

  • Macquarie University Planetarium*: A portable Starlab simulates the appearance of the stars at night. Students will observe the apparent movement of the stars due to the spin of the earth and our movement around the sun.
  • Macquarie University Observatory*: The Observatory offers a ‘starfinder’ session to demonstrate how to identify bright stars, constellations and planets.
  • Online Optoelectronics Simulator: This photonics game gives students information about how photonic components use light to convey information and shows how these components may be used to make photonic circuits such as computer communications networks.
  • Virtual Thrills*: Enter our immersive cave and fly across the landscape of Mars or come on a roller coaster designed to test motion sickness! Experience and find out more about our latest research projects.
  • Computing Workshops: Students can choose creative workshops where they can make their own animation or games or workshops that teach them about programming or computer networking.
  • Switched on Logic: Students will gain hands on experience in designing logic circuits and understanding the role engineering plays in efficient energy use.
  • Engineering in Society: There is more to engineering and its impact on society than just buildings and bridges. This presentation delves into the technological developments within the last century and how they are transforming the way we live.
  • Water Quality Analysis: Students will work in teams to actively catch water samples and then perform their own tests to identify and quantify several heavy metals in the water samples.
  • Chemistry Magic Show: Chemists will carry out a series of tricks, interspersed with jokes, music and sound effects.
  • Live Animal Displays*: This amazing live show introduces students to varied and unique wildlife and focuses on the value of biodiversity and conservation.
  • Anatomy in Action: An interactive module that will include demonstrations of the physical examination of the human body. It will highlight joint actions, nervous system responses, pulses, blood pressure, balance, posture mechanisms, ear and eye examinations amongst many more activities.

If you can’t make it to Macquarie we can bring a tailored program of activities and experiments to you!

*Costs may be incurred with some activities and all are run subject to availability.
