The Area of Study
Information technology courses can cover a wide range of areas, from business and management skills, programming skills, to studies and experience in software or electronic and communication engineering.
Information technology and computing is about building and using systems for productive and leisure activities as well as understanding the fundamental principles that underlie such systems. The core of information technology and computing is focused on studying algorithms, data structures, and the principles of engineering quality software. Elective units allow you to study areas such as networks, artificial intelligence, databases, computer graphics and Web technology.
The Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees offer you maximum flexibility. Other programs such as the Bachelor of Computer Science, the Bachelor of Information Technology, the Bachelor of Information Systems and the Bachelor of eBusiness allow you to focus on areas such as programming, computer systems, mathematical foundations of computer science, information systems and software engineering, information technology and computing.

Recommended Prior Knowledge
HSC Mathematics or its equivalent is assumed knowledge and HSC Mathematics (Band 4) or HSC Mathematics Extension 1 (Band E2) or Mathematics Extension 2, Information Processes and Technology and/or Software Design and Development or their equivalents are recommended studies for information technology and computing. Other units taken as part of a degree may require assumed knowledge, prerequisites or recommended studies and you should refer to the Macquarie University Handbook of Undergraduate Studies for full degree requirements.
