The Area of Study
Economists understand complicated economic and social processes, intervene to make outcomes better, and set policies that have a major effect on society. The study of economics focuses on the properties of supply and demand networks, and involves topics such as altruism, banking and finance, consumer sentiment, debt, equity, environment, forecasting, free trade, game theory, health economics, household formation, Keynesian recessions, market failures, natural monopolies, optimality, public economics, rates of interest, scarcity, technological change, uncertainty, voluntary unemployment, wage differentials and zero population growth.
If you wish to acquire quantitative skills as part of your economics degree, you may include additional econometrics units in your program, or specialise in applied econometrics. Econometrics is the application of quantitative techniques to economics and is used in economic analysis, forecasting, the development and testing of theories and economic models, and policy analysis.
The Department of Economics at Macquarie University is one of the largest economics schools in Australia with highly qualified staff possessing a wealth of international experience gained at some of the world's most prestigious universities, businesses and government organisations.
